May Better Hearing and Speech Month

May is the end of Spring and beginning of summer.  It is the last month of school.  It is the storm before the calm of summer.  It is the month of flowers after the April showers.  And in case you didn’t know, it is Better Speech and Hearing Month!

Now is the time to acknowledge your local speech pathologist for their hard work.  But most importantly, it is the time to realize how important communication is.  Imagine you can’t ask for help when you need it.  Imagine you can’t ask for your favorite food at a restaurant.  Imagine you can’t tell anyone where you are hurt when you are sick.  Everyone is guessing at what you need or want all the time.  Wouldn’t that be so frustrating?

That’s where a speech pathologist comes in.  He or she works with each patient and their caregivers to find out what is most important to the patient and to the family.  This allows basic needs to be met and basic wants to be expressed.  We can get creative in how this is done!  Most communication does not come from verbalizations.  Most communication comes from body language, body movements, etc.  We have our own special ways to make you talk! 🙂
